"Yuishinkai" means "Only Mind" or "Simply Mind" Society. "Aikido Yuishinkai" is a technical and philosophical approach to practicing Aikido as taught by Master Koretoshi Maruyama. "Aikido Yuishinkai International" is an international network of Aikido groups with a freely-given commitment to practicing in the spirit of Aikido Yuishinkai, positively influenced rather than controlled. In the UK, affiliated groups are autonomous and operate under their own structure and leadership. Aikido Yuishinkai UK is therefore not a representative, membership, governing or regulatory body and does not control or regulate Aikido Yuishinkai affiliated Dojos or their practices. Aikido Yuishinkai UK's main activities are:
Aikido Yuishinkai came to the UK in 2004, when Master Koretoshi Maruyama was invited by Denis Burke Sensei to teach a seminar in Andover. Burke Sensei was asked by Maruyama Sensei to continue organising and hosting such seminars, which are now held annually, and he set up Aikido Yuishinkai UK to support that purpose. It operates independently, on the proceeds of seminars, and does not levy charges on Aikido Yuishinkai affiliated groups or their members. It exists purely to facilitate access to Aikido Yuishinkai; it aims to promote Aikido Yuishinkai and to work for the benefit of all, including those un-affiliated to Aikido Yuishinkai that have an interest in Aikido Yuishinkai or its principles. Denis Burke Sensei was introduced to Aikido in 1979 during Summer School with Koichi Tohei Sensei. He met Maruyama Sensei the following year and attended his UK seminars throughout the early eighties. Initially training in west London, he founded the Brixton Ki Club and later moved to Somerset to train as full-time Assistant or Uchi Deshi under Sensei K. Williams, becoming a professional Headquarters Teacher. He founded numerous clubs, including Salisbury Ki Club, and returned to teach in London after being asked by Sensei Williams to take over the full-time Brentford Dojo on his behalf. In 1991 he set up l'Association Française de Ki Aïkido in Paris where he served for two years as KFGB Representative while also fulfilling his duties in England as teacher and Grading Officer. In the year 2000 he resigned from the Ki Federation of Great Britain, founded Isshinkai, and embarked on a period of exploration into new approaches and a return to the origins of Aikido, travelling to the USA and Japan. After reconnecting with Maruyama Sensei in 2004 and spending a week in his company, he joined Aikido Yuishinkai and was awarded 7th Dan by Maruyama Sensei. He now teaches regularly in London and at his full-time Dojo near Andover and spends a portion of his time doing highly valued work with corporates and elite athletes. Believing that Aikido has a great deal to offer the world, Burke Sensei has worked for many years extending his role as professional Aikido Teacher beyond the mat, supporting personal performance, excellence in teamwork and the co-creation of value, in a variety of contexts. |
